In a competitive industry such as cell phones, businesses need every advantage that they can get. Android has been put under a great deal of pressure by the iPhone regime, and that doesn’t look like it is going to let up anytime soon. The fine folks over at the Android company are starting to come up with innovative ways to challenge their competition.

Ubuntu for Android

Ubuntu could very well be the secret weapon along with some other additions in the battle between Android and the iPhone. Needless to say, Android is losing ground and they are looking for things like Ubuntu to help rejuvenate their share of the market. It may never have been one of the best Internet browsers or even one of the most used, but it still remains a simple option for even the least tech-savvy individuals.

Feature Packed

One of the obvious examples of Android taking it to the iPhone is the features that it has been coming up with over the last year. They are worried about the fact that they are losing profits and business, and have stepped up their game to say the least. One difference that you will notice right off of the bat is that iPhone does not have the ability to dock and be used like a computer. You can also find tons of other features that tech savvy people would find very useful.

iPhone Still Has Simplicity

The reason why the iPhone has been such a success in taking a good portion of Android’s market away is because of the simplicity. Most people that own one love the fact that everything is so user friendly and simple. The only problem with that is some people are looking for more from their phone these days. They want to be able to expand and customize it with a ton of features.

Competition Means Lower Prices

Perhaps the best part of having all of these cell phone companies and business involved in the industry is that they have to keep prices competitive. This is always going to end well for the consumer when you have such a battle going on in any industry. Before you know it we will all be able to afford these magnificent phones no matter which company they come from. Competition will always be around in this industry as well—you just have to find which side of the coin you fit in with and which company you like the best for your needs.

Last year, the Apple iPad 2 was released during the spring of 2011, and this year we hope to see the same results with the Apple iPad 3. Because springtime is nearby, a plethora of rumors have been surfacing about the iPad 3 and its features.

Design:

Apple is notorious for its sleek and elegant designs which have proven to attract a wide range of customers, we can only hope that Apple will revolutionize the new iPad 3 design. However, Apple’s new iPhone 4S was practically the exact same as the iPhone 4, thus only time can tell what is in store for the iPad 3. It is rumored that it will have a bulkier design to support a larger battery and retina display.

Display:

A core feature of any smartphone/tablet is its display quality. Apple is known to have crystal clear retina displays for the newest iPhone 4′s and the iPad’s however has been behind as compared to the latest Android tablets which have breached 1080p. It would seem that Apple is increasing the pixel quality in its new successor of iPad’s in order to compete with Android and to provide a new feature to market on its iPad 3.

Processor:

Apple’s iPad 2 processor is a 1GHz dual core A5 chip, comparable to the A5 chip in the iPhone 4S. However, in order to increase a gaming/video experience based on the new display, a higher processor is in order. It is rumored that the new processor will definitely be an A6 chip, however, whether or not this chip will be dual core or quad core is yet to be decided.

Camera:

Apple’s camera quality built on the iPhone 4/4S and iPad 2 have been capable of taking HD pictures and video. It’s even been used in motion pictures such as Transformers 3 where one scene was shot using only an iPhone 4 camera! However, for the iPad 3 it looks like that there will be dual HD cameras in order to facetime in HD.

Other than the above new changes, it would seem that Siri will also be available for the iPad. However, if you know how to jailbreak the iPhone already you can also get Siri on many other devices. More than likely, it would seem the new release for the Apple iPad 3 would be in sometime March 2012.

A new gadget has been created to solve the solution of those travelers who need to charge their electronics but aren’t close to any power sources. This new gadget made by a Swedish company called PowerTrekk solves that issue by using water as a fuel source and using fuel cell technology to create electricity and providing it to any device with a USB port.

The whole charger consists of an eye glass case, a water tray. The size of this charger is small and is portable so that you can take it anywhere, you want. This charger is fuel cell which uses water as power. PowerTrekk, the team behind this charger described it as:

If you are hiking over the weekend with no Starbucks or friend’s flat in sight, your phone can still get charged. PowerTrekk is a portable fuel cell charger for use by outdoor enthusiasts who spend time away from the electricity grid. PowerTrekk provides instant power anywhere to electronic equipment such as mobile phones, digital cameras and GPS devices.

Well, the charger is really an amazing invention, the next thing is how to set up this charger, it is very simple as all, all you need to do is to put some water in the water tray and connect your iPhone using USB cable. The best thing about this charger is that you can connect any device using USB cable.

The container is called Powepukk and is lined with the Sodium Silicide which on reacting with water produces the Hydrogen gas. This will help to generate power to charge the product. PowerTrekk will be released in stores till May or June and will cost you between $200 and $250. However, Tray can be replaced for $4 only. For more information, watch the video embedded below. Or visit their official website at www.powertrekk.com.

Remotely Download Web-Hosted Files

If you want to download a file to your computer that’s hosted somewhere on the web, this is the method you want to use. All you need is an account with Dropbox(our favorite file-syncing tool) and a web browser on your smartphone. To download that file to your home computer from the comfort of your phone, just follow these steps (or watch the video to the left):

Grab the URL of the file you want to download on your smartphone.

Open any web browser on your smartphone and head over to urldroplet.com.

Enter the URL in URL Droplet’s only text field and click the “Log In” button.

Log into your Dropbox account and grant access to URL Droplet.

When you’re back on the main URL Droplet page, scroll down to the bottom of the screen and see if the file is listed as queued. If not, just add it again via URL Droplet’s only text field and click the “Save” button.

It’ll take a few minutes for the file to show up in your Dropbox, but when it does it’ll be in the root folder and you can use it when you get back to any computer that’s syncing your Dropbox folder.

Pretty easy! If you want to see a walkthrough, watch the video above.

Alternatively, if you want to do this with a native iPhone app, download Drop It ($1). For another option, your could set If This Then That to add, for example, emailed file URLs to your Dropbox (learn how to use it with our guide).

Remotely Download Torrents

There are a few ways to remotely download torrents, and we have a bunch of guides to help you do it. If you want to stick with the same basic method outlined above, you can send .torrent files remotely to your Dropbox folder. For a little more control, though, you might prefer just using uTorrent’s mobile interfaceto remotely schedule torrents instead:

Grab a copy of uTorrent (if you don’t have one already).

Open up uTorrent and edit its Preferences/Settings.

Go to the “Remote” tab and check the box next to “Enable uTorrent Remote”.

Enter a unique computer name and a password. If your computer name is accepted and isn’t in use by anyone else, you’ll be asked to answer a new security question. Fill in your answer and press okay.

Go to remote.utorrent.com in your smartphone’s web browser and log in with your computer’s name and password.

Press the + button to add a new torrent via URL.

Are you waiting for the iPad 3? Wait, have you heard the latest rumor circling about in town? Rumor has it that Apple is allegedly going to release an iPad 4 this year in October after the release of iPad 3 in March. This the latest rumor from Digitimes which splashed down this morning, claiming we should expect two new iPad models this year.

Digitimes has been making numerous claims about Apple’s new products recently in the past few months. Not all of them are true but it does seem that they have somewhat insights into the Apple’s tablet devices. For now let’s just look into the timeline of the Apple products in the past years.

Apple launched its first iPhone in July 2007 followed up by iPhone 3G in the year 2008. The iPhone 3GS was released in the year 2009 in July followed up by the iPhone 4 in June 2010. The CDMA supporting iPhone 4 was then released in the same year as the release of iPhone 4S. But that doesn’t count as the CDMA iPhone 4 is somewhat the same as the simple iPhone 4 except the fact that it was set to work with a different cellular network technology. Same is the case with iPad, Apple launched its first iPad in 2010 followed by the iPad 2 in year 2011.

In other words Apple has been releasing one iteration per year of the iOS devices. So what can be change in strategy of the company to launch two iPads in one year, sabotaging the product they’ve just launched the same year? This question will yet remain unanswered.

According to Digitimes, however, “The 9.7-inch iPad 4 is expected to come with much upgraded hardware specifications and integrated applications so as to compete with an array of Android-, Wintel- or WoA (Windows on ARM)-based tablet PCs to be released in the fourth quarter.”

All that virtual currency sold in mobile games is anything but virtual in terms of revenue. Juniper Research, in a new mobile games report, said that worldwide revenues from mobile in-game purchases totaled $2.1 billion in 2011 and is expected to grow to $4.8 billion by 2016.

This suggests that the freemium model will become even more entrenched in mobile as developers, particularly social game makers, leverage the sale of virtual goods and currency to generate revenue. It’s already an important tool for top app makers, who are bringing in serious money from in-game purchases. And as smartphones penetration grows, it’s going to become an even more important monetization tool for developers.

App analytics firm Distimo said in its year-end report that 65 percent of the revenue in the 200 top grossing apps in Android Market came from freemium apps, while half of the revenue in the top 200 grossing iPhone apps came from freemium apps. Flurry said last year that the average in-game transaction for mobile games was $14, a figure that is pumped up by some big-spending users.

The benefits of going freemium is that by making an app free, it exposes it to a much wider audience, who might not pay to download a similar app. Then app makers can get to work trying to entice users to pay up for extra currency or items. It can be a fine line, with some developers pushing too hard for revenue and running off consumers annoyed at constant pitches to buy stuff. But when done well, it can be a very lucrative model.

And it also helps address the question of piracy, said Charlotte Miller, who authored the Juniper report. She said freemium developers don’t have to worry as much about losing revenue to piracy while still verifying purchases for goods on their own servers.

Just because there’s expensive tablets like the Apple iPad available in America, doesn’t mean the cheap version can be useful in other countries. A new innovative idea is helping people in underprivileged countries get a taste of the digital world.

While the Amazon Kindle Fire is changing the landscape of the tablet market in the United States, the super affordable $45 Aakash Android slate is taking India by storm. A pilot program originally distributed 1,000,000 of the tablet to Indian students, but it was subsequently released to the public. The tablet proved to be so popular that its UK-based manufacturer, Datawind, received 1.4 million pre-orders in merely two weeks.

While pre-orders don’t always translate to sales, an average reservation rate of 100,000 per day is still impressive, considering the tablet market in India only sold 250,000 to 300,000 units in 2011. The first 30,000 Aakash tablets were snapped up quickly after going on sale, which is perfectly understandable given their price tag — and students even get a $10 discount. In order to keep up with the enormous demand, Datawind will build three more factories to ramp up production to 70,000 to 75,000 units a day by April.

The 7″ Aakash Android tablet doesn’t offer much in terms of features. Nevertheless, it fulfills its purpose, which is to provide Indian youths with an affordable wifi-capable device to help them with their studies. Datawind will also start selling a $55 upgraded version of the tablet in mid-January that comes with 2G connection and a slightly better processor.
