Apple iPad 4 May Be Released This Year (Rumors)

Are you waiting for the iPad 3? Wait, have you heard the latest rumor circling about in town? Rumor has it that Apple is allegedly going to release an iPad 4 this year in October after the release of iPad 3 in March. This the latest rumor from Digitimes which splashed down this morning, claiming we should expect two new iPad models this year.

Digitimes has been making numerous claims about Apple’s new products recently in the past few months. Not all of them are true but it does seem that they have somewhat insights into the Apple’s tablet devices. For now let’s just look into the timeline of the Apple products in the past years.

Apple launched its first iPhone in July 2007 followed up by iPhone 3G in the year 2008. The iPhone 3GS was released in the year 2009 in July followed up by the iPhone 4 in June 2010. The CDMA supporting iPhone 4 was then released in the same year as the release of iPhone 4S. But that doesn’t count as the CDMA iPhone 4 is somewhat the same as the simple iPhone 4 except the fact that it was set to work with a different cellular network technology. Same is the case with iPad, Apple launched its first iPad in 2010 followed by the iPad 2 in year 2011.

In other words Apple has been releasing one iteration per year of the iOS devices. So what can be change in strategy of the company to launch two iPads in one year, sabotaging the product they’ve just launched the same year? This question will yet remain unanswered.

According to Digitimes, however, “The 9.7-inch iPad 4 is expected to come with much upgraded hardware specifications and integrated applications so as to compete with an array of Android-, Wintel- or WoA (Windows on ARM)-based tablet PCs to be released in the fourth quarter.”

In Game Mobile Purchases to Reach $4.8 Billion by 2016

All that virtual currency sold in mobile games is anything but virtual in terms of revenue. Juniper Research, in a new mobile games report, said that worldwide revenues from mobile in-game purchases totaled $2.1 billion in 2011 and is expected to grow to $4.8 billion by 2016.

This suggests that the freemium model will become even more entrenched in mobile as developers, particularly social game makers, leverage the sale of virtual goods and currency to generate revenue. It’s already an important tool for top app makers, who are bringing in serious money from in-game purchases. And as smartphones penetration grows, it’s going to become an even more important monetization tool for developers.

App analytics firm Distimo said in its year-end report that 65 percent of the revenue in the 200 top grossing apps in Android Market came from freemium apps, while half of the revenue in the top 200 grossing iPhone apps came from freemium apps. Flurry said last year that the average in-game transaction for mobile games was $14, a figure that is pumped up by some big-spending users.

The benefits of going freemium is that by making an app free, it exposes it to a much wider audience, who might not pay to download a similar app. Then app makers can get to work trying to entice users to pay up for extra currency or items. It can be a fine line, with some developers pushing too hard for revenue and running off consumers annoyed at constant pitches to buy stuff. But when done well, it can be a very lucrative model.

And it also helps address the question of piracy, said Charlotte Miller, who authored the Juniper report. She said freemium developers don’t have to worry as much about losing revenue to piracy while still verifying purchases for goods on their own servers.

A New Cheap Tablet in India Sells 1.4 Million Pre-Orders in 2 Weeks!

Just because there’s expensive tablets like the Apple iPad available in America, doesn’t mean the cheap version can be useful in other countries. A new innovative idea is helping people in underprivileged countries get a taste of the digital world.

While the Amazon Kindle Fire is changing the landscape of the tablet market in the United States, the super affordable $45 Aakash Android slate is taking India by storm. A pilot program originally distributed 1,000,000 of the tablet to Indian students, but it was subsequently released to the public. The tablet proved to be so popular that its UK-based manufacturer, Datawind, received 1.4 million pre-orders in merely two weeks.

While pre-orders don’t always translate to sales, an average reservation rate of 100,000 per day is still impressive, considering the tablet market in India only sold 250,000 to 300,000 units in 2011. The first 30,000 Aakash tablets were snapped up quickly after going on sale, which is perfectly understandable given their price tag — and students even get a $10 discount. In order to keep up with the enormous demand, Datawind will build three more factories to ramp up production to 70,000 to 75,000 units a day by April.

The 7″ Aakash Android tablet doesn’t offer much in terms of features. Nevertheless, it fulfills its purpose, which is to provide Indian youths with an affordable wifi-capable device to help them with their studies. Datawind will also start selling a $55 upgraded version of the tablet in mid-January that comes with 2G connection and a slightly better processor. Source: TheNextWeb
